The University of the West Indies opened up a four point gap at the top of the Red Stripe Premier League when they thrashed former champions Tivoli Gardens 4-0 in the opening fixture of the Monday Night double header, before Portmore United put on a similar 4-0 pasting on desperate Boys Town on a cold, wet night inside the National Stadium.

In the first game, Anthony Greenland began the goal glut when he opened the scoring for UWI in the 39th minute before Girvon Brown made it 2-0 at the interval when he scored three minutes into first half stoppage time. Captain Rochane Smith made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute before Akeem Thenstead completed the rout two minutes from time. The UWI now owns Tivoli Gardens as they were registering their third win over the Omar Edwards coached team this season.

The UWI who are on 50 points, now leads second placed Humble Lion by four points with seven sets of games remaining in the final round of the regular season.

Portmore United recovered from their midweek defeat to Tivoli Gardens to spank Boys Town and sink the Red Brigade deep into further trouble.

Tremaine Stewart got the opener in first half stoppage time before Michael Binns made it 2-0 ten minutes after the restart. Late goals from captain Ewan Grandison in the 89th minute and Suelae McCalla in second half stoppage time capped a miserable night for the luckless Andrew Price coached team.

Portmore United have now moved up two places to fourth spot on 44 points, but will be absent from the league for a few weeks as they contest in the CFU Club Championships.

In the games played on Sunday, Jamalco FC came out on top of the battle of the promoted teams, beating Marverley/Hughenden 2-0 to switch places with their opponents and edge their way out of the relegation zone.

Ronaldo Christian opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Andrew Isaacs made the game safe when he netted fifteen minutes from time. Jamalco are now two points above the drop zone on 26 points while Marverley are stuck on 24 points and remain mired in the relegation scrap.

Over at Drewsland, the revival continued for Waterhouse under the guidance of Glendon “Admiral” Bailey, as they have now gone seven games unbeaten, following their 0-0 draw with title chasing Humble Lion FC.

Both sets of strikers spurned good chances to score in front of a full house as Humble Lion missed a chance to go top of the table, if only for a few hours and Waterhouse failed to close the gap on the teams above them in the hunt for a top six finish.

In the late game at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium, the hosts went down 2-3 to Arnett Gardens after leading at half time and spurned probably their last chance of getting into the top six.

Newton Sterling gave the visitors the early lead when he scored just two minutes in but Harbour View were level in the 35th minute, when Dicoy Williams put passed his own keeper. Kemar Bennett gave the Ludlow Bernard coached team the lead at the interval when he scored in the first minute of stoppage time.

But the Jerome Waite coached team recovered from the first half setback with two quick second half strikes to down the Stars of the East. Leon Strickland drew the “Junglists” level in the 61st minute before Sterling complete his brace and handed Arnett all three points when he scored again in the 64th minute.

Arnett Gardens, who remain in sixth place, was the only West Kingston based team to win on match day 26 and are now on 41 points, ten clear of seventh placed Reno FC who were idle on the day due to the CFU Club Championship commitments of Montego Bay United FC.

The league continues on Wednesday and Thursday with another set of midweek fixtures.
