Bolt is safe for the 200m assures Garth Gayle

JAAA General Secretary Garth Gayle has rubbished reports carried in the local media that Usain Bolt may miss out on a chance to defend his Olympic 200m title at the Games in Rio next month if he fails to take part in the 200m at the National Championships currently taking place this weekend.

Fans have be up in arms since reading the reports but the General Secretary has moved swiftly to clear the air – below is an official statement from Gayle:

 

“It’s a clear process, we have a selection committee and we make recommendations and our Executive then ratifies that. We are governed by the rules that govern all competitions (speaking to May 1, 2015 to July 11, 2016 qualification period for the Olympic Games).

“Only the governing body can make adjustments to their rules and the rules are clear. The wish of the Executive is that we have the best available athletes represent us at all times.”

Bolt has the fastest time in the world in the 200m (19.55) over the Olympic qualification period and will next compete at the London Diamond League on July 22, where he must show that he has recovered and is fit to compete.

While the qualification period ends on July 11, 2016, NOC’s have up to July 18 to submit their teams.

Also, the JAAA, like all other athletics administrations is allowed to provisionally enter up to four athletes per event before confirming the final three (where applicable) during the Games.
