BOLT, FRAZER- PRYCE LEAD JAMAICAN WINNERS AT 2015 CASJA AWARDS

Reigning 100 metre World sprint champions Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce walked away with the top awards at the second Annual Caribbean Sports Awards, organised by the Caribbean Sports Journalists’ Association (CASJA) on Monday Night.

It was night belonging to Jamaica as the country copped the top spot in five of the six categories for awards on offer.

Fraser-Pryce who copped her third 100m title in Beijing edged Cuban Pole Vault World Champion Yarisley Silva and fellow countrywoman, swimmer Alia Atkinson for the Sportswoman of the Year title.

Bolt who copped his fifth 200 and fourth 100 meter title in Beijing in August, was selected as the Sportsman of the Year, with the runner up spots going to double gold medallist in F44 discus and Javelin, Paralympic athlete Akeem Stewart of Trinidad and Tobago and World Championship Shot put Bronze medallist O’Dayne Richards of Jamaica.

World 100m Hurdles Champion Danielle Williams who missed out on the top three in the Sportswoman category was named the top Rising Stars in the Caribbean for 2015.

World Championship 400 bronze medallist and 4×400 relay gold medallist Shericka Jackson of Jamaica and the silver medallist in the 100m at the IAAF World Youth Championships, Khalifa St Fort of Trinidad and Tobago were voted for the runner up spots.

World Championship bronze medallist over 400m hurdles, Jeffrey Gibson of the Bahamas, won the male equivalent. Michael Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago and O’Dayne Richards were Runners-up to Gibson, a category in which two of Jamaica’s premier junior athletes, Akeem Bloomfield and Christopher Taylor, were nominees.

The Team of the Year awards were dominated by Jamaican relay squads to Beijing. The 4x100m championship victorious quartet of Veronica Campbell-Brown, Natasha Morrison, Elaine Thompson and Fraser-Pryce copped the Female Team of the Year.

They managed to secure the title ahead of the history makers, and fellow countrywomen, the Jamaica 4×400 meter queens, comprising of Shericka Jackson, Christine Day, Stephenie Ann McPherson and Novlene Williams-Mills, and the West Indies Women cricket team which won the 2015 Series against the touring Pakistan Women.

The quartet of Nesta Carter, Asafa Powell, Nickel Ashmeade, Usain Bolt were voted the Male Team of Year for the 4x100m gold at the IAAF World Championships in a world leading time of 37.36 seconds.

Pan American Games 4x400m champions and silver medal winners at the World Championships Trinidad & Tobago had to settle for the runners-up spot , along with the Jamaica’s ‘Reggae Boyz’ who finished as the beaten finalist at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
