JAMAICA SET TO CONTINUE DOMINANCE AT CARIFTA GAMES

Photo: Akeem Bloomfield of Kingston College became the first Jamaican schoolboy to run under 45 seconds in the 400m when he ran a blistering 44.93s at Champs 2015.

Jamaica’s team to the 44th edition of the CARIFTA Games to be held in St Kitts April 3-6, departed the island on Thursday, as they set sights on overhauling the 89 medals (42 gold, 34 silver and 13 bronze) won at the 43rd edition last year in Martinique.

The 80 member team features several defending champions and 2015 Boys and Girls championship winners, including,Tamara Moncrieff, Rochelle Frazer, Kimone Shaw, Janeek Brown, Natalliah Whyte, Chrissani May, Fiona Richard, Junelle Bromfield, Shellece Clark, Ayesha Champagnie, Shanieke Watson, Lamara Distin, collegiate athlete Yanique Thompson and Sasha-gay Whyte,

On the male side, there will be the likes of Champs champion boy Michael O’Hara, Akeem Bloomfield, Jaheel Hyde, Jauavney James, Lushae Wilson, Clayton Brown , Odaine Lewis , Demar Gayl, Obrien Wasome and Christoff Bryan.

New additions to the initial team announced are Decathlon and heptathlon athletes from Champs; and Shakiel Chattoo of Calabar High and Zinedine Russell Convent of Mercy Alpha Academy. Calabar High school Sprinter and Champs double winner Dejour Russell has been drafted to replace injured KC sprinter Jhevaugh Mattherson, who got injured at Champs.

Jamaica College’s Orville Brown will be the team’s head coach.
