FUTURE STARS SHINE BRIGHT AT CARIFTA TRAILS 2015

The nation’s Junior athletes turned out at the National Stadium on March 7& 8, all in a bid to secure spots on the country’s team to the 2015 Carifta Games, scheduled for St Kitts and Nevis, from April 4th to 6th.

Several Big names stars came face to face at the start line in what some regard as a dress rehearsal to Boys and Girls Championship 2015, which just a few day away.

Day One saw events such 400m hurdles, 100m, 3000m, 5000m, triple jump, long jump, and a number of other field events being contested in two age group (U20 and U18).

Wolmers Boys Jaheel Hyde 49.78 (seconds) and Andrenette Knight of St Jago (58.63) won the 400 hurdles under 20 boys and girls event respectively.

The U18 event section to two new faces in this event, St. Elizabeth High school pair of Junelle Bromfield (58.13 seconds) and Javauney James (52.77) topping the girls’ and boys’ equivalent.

The 100 sprints was a battle royal in all four categories. World Youth Olympic Champion Natalliah White of St Jago High outclassed her competitors to pocket the top spot in the U20 girl’s event. She won in a time of 11.71 seconds ahead of the new rising Vere Technical Star Rene Medley (11.76s). Both athletes managed to shut out Wolmerian Shauna Helps (11.78s) out of the top two spots.

In the Under 20 Boys event it was the former World Youth 200 metre champion Michael O’Hara of Calabar High prevailing in 10.45 seconds over the talented Raheem Chambers of St Jago (10.57s). STETHS new sprint prodigy Nigel Ellis (10.67s) was third.

St Jago High transfer, Shaneil English clocked 11.59 seconds in a cracking Under-18 event. She won ahead of Shellece Clarke (11.66s) of Edwin Allen and teammate Kimone Shaw (11.67s).

It was Calabar High again in the Under 18 event with Tyreke Wilson (10. 55) who led home a quenella for his school, finishing ahead of teammate Xavier Angus (10.58s) and Rushane Edwards (10.76s) of Munro College.

Holmwood’s Shanieke Watson ran the 3000m all by herself for the most part to cross the line in a time of 10:08.05 seconds. The Boys equivalent went to Keenon Lawrence.

Another Holmwood Athlete in Chrissanni May (2:09.92) ran a tactically smart race to defeat event favourite Vere’s Britnie Dixon (2: 16. 84) in the under 18 girls 800m.

Vere Technical Sasha Gaye Whyte ensured she secured the U20 event in a brisk 2:11. 38 seconds.

The male equivalents went to Devaugh Smith of Spaulding 1:57.77 seconds (U20) and Leon Clarke 1:54.77 seconds U 18 respectively.

While the Track was abuzz with excitement, the field was serving up some great moments with St Jago’s Lushane Wilson, treating fans to some brilliant high jumping, He secured the event with new personal best and second highest jump by a Jamaican this year of 2.15m. The U20 event was won my Clayton Brown of Jamaica College with the same mark of 2:15m.

Tamara Moncrieffe of Holmwood secured the U 20 triple jump with a mark of 12.99m.

Day Two was equally exciting, with action in other events such as the 400m, 200m, sprint hurdles and 800m.

Shaneil English secured the U-18 sprint double; winning the 200m in a fast 24.07seconds, and again ahead of her teammate Shaw 24.30 seconds The U-18 Boys went to Xavier Angus of Calabar High, in 21.08 seconds

Saqukine Cameron clocked a personal best of 23.18 to win the U-20 girls 200m in dominant fashion. Medley of Vere again sneaked in for another second spot 23.81 seconds, regulating 100 champion Whyte to third best 23.98 seconds.

The Boys event was won by Chad Walker, 20.97 seconds ahead of Ellis, 21.23 seconds.

Jaheel Hyde wrapped up the hurdles double winning the 110m event in a PB of 13.22 ahead of Calabar Seanie Selvin taking second place in 13.42.

Wolmers Janeek Brown won the girls U-18, 100m hurdles ahead of St. Jago’s Safiya Thompson, 13.43 seconds.

World Youth champion Yanique Thompson, formerly of Holmwood, now at GC Foster College, won the Under-20 event in 13.63, just edging ahead of Immaculate Jeanie Williams 13. 64 seconds..

In the U-18 Boys 400m Christopher Taylor, left the stadium crowd and the track and field world at large in awe, when he ran youth aged world record of 45.69, taking the record from World and Olympic Champion Kirani James done from 2008.

The ladies event went to St. Elizabeth Technical Superwoman, Broomfield, who romped home in 53.30 second s for a double, after securing the 400 hurdles on day one. Vere Technical Sanique Walker finished second in 54.53 seconds.

After Running a blinder in the U-20 girls 400m, Aleesha Kelly of Hydel was disqualified after crossing the line first, as a result world youth representative Tiffany James ( 53. 49) was handed victory, ahead of Camperdown’s Dawna lee Looney ( 53.59)

Kingston College’s Akeem Bloomfield was also in nonsense mood running a very fast 45.41 for the victory in the under 20 boys 400m.

Lisa Buchanan of Holmwood won the under 20 girls 1500 finals in 4:34.68 ahead of Vere’s Whyte ( 4:37.33).The boys event went to STETHS Shemar Salmon who won in 4: 03. 97 seconds.

It was double for St. Andrews Technical High School Ayesha Champagnie who won the Shot put and Javelin with marks of 13.69m and 46.75m.
