The UWIFC made light work of Rae Town in the Jamaica National/KSAFA Super League on Saturday when they defeated their opponents, 7-1 at the UWI Bowl courtesy of a hat-trick from Mitch Wright and a brace from substitute Jeffery Brown.

Wright got his first after only seven minutes when he was given time and space inside the box to turn, pick his spot and slot home. His strike partner, Andrae Bernal came close seven minutes later when he too was let unmarked inside the box but his shot was just wide.

UWI continued to dominate possession but failed to make it count and Rae Town eventually worked their way into the game before finding the equalizer.

A sweeping team move down the right side ended with Shemar Dillion flicking the ball over the head of the advancing Leighton Donaldson to make it 1-1 in the 38th minute.

Stung into action, the UWI upped their tempo and retook the lead three minutes before the interval. A short corner was played in to Wright and with no one closing him down he was able to pick his spot yet again, before arrowing his shot into the roof of the net. It was a brilliant strike that gave Oshane Richards no chance.

Davon Montague, who was brought in at half time for the injured Mark McKoy, could have had his name on the score sheet with less than 20 seconds played in the second half. Wright was released down the right channel and drove towards the box before crossing but the substitute was unable to keep his shot down from 6 yards.

Wright took matters into his own hands and completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute when he ruthlessly rifled home from close range from a cross from Bernal.

Bernal, who had had a hand in the first three goals finally found the back of the net in the 61st minute when he slotted home at the back post following a quickly taken corner.

With just under fifteen minutes left to play, Brown was brought in for Wright and found the back of the net with his first touch. With the defenders backing off of him instead of closing the space, the Arsenal fan fired home from ten yards to make it 5-1.

Brown was clearly making up for lost time, having been out with a knee injury and got his second, just four minutes later making it 6-1 with an easy tap-in.

Another substitute, Jason Gregory, completed the scoring with a good finish at the back post, a side foot volley on minute 87, to complete the rout of a team that defended poorly for the entire game.

UWI coach Marcel Gayle was in seventh heaven at the final whistle.

“Credit must be given to the team today on scoring a pretty comprehensive victory. Unfortunately we had one lapse in concentration and conceded a goal but it would have been nice if we kept a clean sheet.

“I am pleased with the overall performance of the team and two of our substitutes came off the bench to score today which is really good,” he concluded.

The competition will break during the holidays before resuming in January.
