ISSA Netball

The ISSA 2014 Urban Netball double Champions for the Senior and junior divisions, The Queens School having defeated St Hugh’s 47-35 and Norman Manley 33-24, respectively, came face to face with rural kingpins in the All-Island Championships on Friday, December 5th, at St Andrew High School.

The Marvette Anderson-coached junior girls opposed Denbigh High in the junior clash and took charge from the first whistle to run away 35- 28 victors. They dominated the first two quarters to lead 12-5 after the first and 20-11 at the interval.

Denbigh surged back into the game when they won the third quarter 11- 4 to close the cap to just two goals entering the final quarter. However there was no stopping Queens as they rolled over the Clarendon ladies, thanks to the brilliance of their goal attack Shanique Francis who shot 23 of 31 attempts. She received good support from goal shooter Tishana Daley 12 from 14 attempts.

The Queen’s senior team came face to face in a match that featured the same opposition from the 2013 finals, Holmwood Technical. Even with the services of junior national player Simone Gordon who has been steadying their ship all season long, they could not contain the outstanding goal shooter Tracy Ann Francis, from the hills of Christiana.

The Queens ladies took the early lead outscoring their opponents in the first two quarters to lead 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and 21-19 at half time. But Holmwood would have none of it and stormed back to tie the game at 30-30 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams had a ding dong battle to the end trading goal for goal to end at 40 all in regular time.

It took extra time to decide the winner and the Carlene Graham-Powell coached girls with goal shooter Francis showing true fighting spirit despite an injured knee to shoot 50 of 57 attempts to steer the game to Holmwood shore with a 51- 45 final score

Gordon scored 35 from 42 in a losing effort for the losers, supporting her was Tamoya Henry with 10 from 12 attempts
