St. Peter & Paul pulled off a stunning upset when they eliminated former champions Vaz Prep 2-1 as action began in the JISA Prep School’s Henriques Cup on Wednesday.

Unranked St. Peter & Paul took on the number 4 ranked Vaz at the UWI Bowl and went ahead after just eight minutes when Brad Strachan scored from a melee following a corner kick.

The early goal stunned Vaz into action and led by Jhavier Lynch they went on the hunt for the equalizer. The striker hit the upright in the twelfth minute when he met a corner on the volley and fired towards goal. Two minutes later, Lynch flicked the ball over the head of the centre half but his powerful shot was straight at goalkeeper, Ajani Brown.

The Vaz attacks kept coming and in the 16th minute Lynch was again denied by Brown, when his shot from distance which was headed for the top corner of the net, was pushed unto the crossbar before being cleared behind for a corner kick.

Mathieu Rose who was doing good work for Vaz down the right flank was next to be denied by Brown when his shot from wide was well held by the goalkeeper.

A minute later, Brown pulled off a brilliant double save to preserve his team’s one goal lead. A shot from the edge of the box by Iyari Harris was blocked by Brown and Lynch reacted quickest to the loose ball. But Brown was up in a flash to deny Lynch from drawing Vaz level.

The great work by Brown in goal helped St. Peter & Paul to maintain the 1-0 lead at half time.

Having not learned from the first half, the Vaz Prep defenders allowed Strachan to run almost unattended into the area at slot past Jalen Young to make it 2-0 with just over a minute of the second half played.

Again, Lynch tried to rally his team and was denied yet again by the brilliant Brown who pushed away a free kick destined for the top left hand corner of the goal.

Moments later Brown produced a fantastic reflex save to keep out a shot from Kevoni Palmer after seeing the ball late as it came through a crush of players.

Jahceel White held the St. Peter & Paul defence together and they put in a desperate rear guard action to keep out the Vaz Prep attackers. Midway the second half Harris got by two defenders before firing just wide of the far post.

Jay D’N Johnson had the chance to seal the victory for St. Peter & Paul with just over 10 minutes left to play but his free kick from the edge of the area went high over the cross bar.

Nine minutes from time Imari Harris reduced the deficit to 2-1, when he scored from the spot for Vaz after a penalty was awarded for hand ball.

Lynch had a glorious chance to pull Vaz level with only five minutes left to play but his glancing header went wide of the mark as he rose unchallenged at the back post.

In the end the brace from Strachan was enough to send the Old Hope Road team through to the next round while Vaz will now have to turn their attention to the Alberga Cup which resumes next week.

In the day’s first game at the UWI Bowl, St. Jago Prep defeated Ardenne Prep 6-5 in sudden death penalties. Trafalgar Prep failed to show for their game with Hydel Prep.
