Just a day after losing their most experienced and perhaps their best defensive minded midfielder in Michael Carrick to a groin injury, Manchester United has perhaps reached a crisis level with a fresh injury. Spanish international David de Gea has picked up an injury during training with the Spanish national team leaving Louis van Gaal without any of his senior figures in the defensive unit.

The 24 year old who was voted the Player’s Player of the Year last season joins Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Johnny Evans and Carrick on the injury list. If he was to miss more than 2 weeks of action, it would leave manager Louis van Gaal more than short in the defensive department. This comes as a hammer blow for the Red Devils who have endured a nightmare with injuries so far this season, especially in the heart of defense. Just 11 games into season, van Gaal has fielded 8 different partnerships as he struggles to keep his defenders healthy.

The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper picked up the injury after he tried to stop a low, powerful strike from Valencia hit-man Paco Alcacer. He was immediately consulted by the team doctors who managed to contain the swelling but decided that the 6ft 4in goalkeeper couldn’t continue with training. De Gea has since decided not to return to Manchester just yet because he wants to stay and give his support to his teammates.

De Gea has been in excellent form so far this season and has been tipped to make the number one spot his own for Spain. Fans have been calling for the axing of Spanish legend Iker Casillas in favour of the Man United number one. He has made his full international debut so far this season and was in line for a starting birth in La Roja Furia’s friendly against Germany on November 18.
