Defending champions Jamaica College who hammered Jonathan Grant 5-0 on the opening day of the season, along with many time champions St. Georges College (STGC) Kingston College (KC) and Wolmer’s Boys will be in action on a day when nine games are schedules in the Manning Cup competition.
The champions are determined to defend their title and will certainly come out with all guns blazing when they play away to St. Andrew Technical High School (STATHS). The hosts will be desperate to avoid a second straight defeat. They defeated Kingston Technical on the opening day before losing 2-1 to Jonathan Grant on Tuesday. They may however, find it difficult to keep out Junior Flemmings and his teammates.
Norman Manley, playing without talisman Shaquelle Lewis eked out a 1-0 win over Kingston Technical High school on Tuesday and will be hoping that the return of their main striker will coincide with an improved performance in front of goal when they face Jonathan Grant. Having lost by a big margin on match-day one, Jonathan Grant will be hoping to give a much better account of themselves as they try not to get left behind in the group.
STGC started out with a slender 1-0 win at Waterford and will be looking to do much better in front of goal when they host Campion College. The North Street based school has one of the better playing surfaces in the country and should expect that the comforts of home will lead to better fortunes. Campion has already lost two straight games and are in danger of being cut adrift early.
KC who had a less than impressive start despite a 2-0 win in their opener against Campion, will play away to Jose Marti, hoping for an improved performance. The Lenny Hyde coached team are in transition but the school has been without a win in this competition since 1986, so the expectations, from the Old Boys especially, increases each year. The home team has one win and one loss so far and will be hoping to give their more celebrated opponents are hard time.
The game between Camperdown High and Papine High was not played on Tuesday due to an improperly marked field. It is unlikely that a similar mistake will be made today when Camperdown hosts Greater Portmore, who has one win and one loss to date.
Papine has one loss while Dunoon Technical has two so far so their game today could go either way. Both sets of players and coaches will be looking to gather the three points from this encounter.
Both Haile Selassie and Birdgeport High have one win and one loss and will view three points as critical today. This group is still wide open so everything is still there to play for.
The game between Wolmer’s Boys and Spanish Town High will be the TVJ game of the day today. After a relatively easy romp against Clan Carthy on Tuesday, the Ludlow Bernard coached boys will look to step up their performance in front of goal as they seek to improve their goals tally. Spanish Town is not likely to roll over and played dead so the Heroes Circle based boys will have to work hard today.
Having played a game more than their opponents Holy Trinity and group favourites Wolmer’s, unlikely group leaders, Trench Town, look to make it three from three when they host “Trinity”. A win would see them stake a real claim for a spot in the second round so a good performance can be expected from them. Holy Trinity are a team in transition but will still be hoping to at least get to the second round, so this game should be an interesting one that could go either way. The game originally scheduled for today, will be played tomorrow at the same time and place.
