Kingston, Jamaica – A battle royal is highly anticipated between defending champions Naggo Head and title aspirants New Providence, as less than a point separate the two heading into Saturday’s final day of the 34th INSPORTS/SEPROD Primary School Athletics Championship at the National Stadium.
After six finals, Naggo Head leads the pack with 29.75 points, ahead of New Providence (29 points), Rousseau (23), Black River (20.75), St John’s (20) and Clan Carthy (13) at the conclusion of Friday’s fourth and penultimate day which was once again hampered by rain.
Thirty-four more finals will be contested on the final day which will be televised live on CVM TV starting from 12 noon. Start time for the meet is 9:00 am.
Jhanell Gordon of New Providence won the Girls’ long jump Open with a leap of 4.60m ahead of Shenelle Evans of Naggo Head 4.54m and Corinaldi’s Adiana Brown, who took home the silver at 4.42 metres.
Black River of St Elizabeth continues to make a lasting impression in their debut season at these championships with Maise Cunningham winning gold in the Boys’ cricket ball throw Open. Cunningham separated himself from the field with a best effort of 57.90m, easily beating Leroy Aaron of Morant Bay, 54.48m and Doshain Gordon of St. John’s 54.15 metres.
Apalos Edwards of New Providence showed that he is definitely one for the future by capturing the Boys’ high jump Open with a mark of 1.50m. Edwards, who failed at 1.60m in an attempt to break Tre-Vonne Smith record of 1.57m set in 201, was clearly a cut above teammate Dean Clarke, who sealed the silver with 1.45m and Naggo Head’s Kevin Smith, who cleared the same height.
Meanwhile, the race for championship honours is still a wide open affair between defending champions, New Providence, Greater Portmore, St. John’s as they have all qualified in a number of finals.
