It’s crunch time for Trinidad and Tobago; the lone representative of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) in the semi-finals of the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship.
The Soca Princesses will meet the USA at 7:00pm on Friday, January 17, at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Grand Cayman.
Preceding this highly anticipated matchup, Mexico will face off against Costa Rica at the same venue at 4:00pm. The finals will be staged on Sunday January 19, at 7:00pm after the playing of the third and fourth play-off at 4:00pm.
An elated Head Coach of the Soca Princesses Izler Browne, thanked the CFU for their support towards the team, “The team was extremely happy about qualifying for the next round, which gives us a shot of qualifying for the world cup. This was our first task as a team coming into the tournament and it was accomplished.
“The preparation to play against the US is basically, playing a lot more discipline, compact, possibly playing a bit deeper at times, so we keep them in front of as much as possible, as one of their strengths is getting behind teams,” said Browne.
While not divulging all of the ‘Trini’ game plan, Browne has a few tricks up her sleeve.
“Our attacks might be counters at times or more of a buildup, or a combination, according to our game plan. The team is more like a collective effort. We have a group that has sensational individuals that can make huge differences in the game, put them together and the results are tremendous for us,” Browne commented.
Trinidad & Tobago created history and made the CFU proud by securing a place in the semifinals for the first time after defeating Honduras 2-0, hosts Cayman Islands 4-0 and losing 3 -0 to the USA. They have their eyes set on a place in the FIFA Women’s Under 20 finals scheduled for August this year in Canada.
The other two CFU teams, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands will have to wait for the next tournament to try again after failing to make it into the final four. Jamaica drew 0-0 with Guatemala and 1-1 with Costa Rica and lost to the USA, while the Cayman Islands Girls lost all three games.
